Archer was a painter of genre, he painted portraits, landscapes and historical scenes. At first painted chalk portraits, but in 1849 he exhibited his first historical picture 'The Last Supper'. About 1859 he began to paint a series of Arthurian subjects, which show Pre-Raphaelite influence. In 1862 he settled in London, and turned mainly to sentimental historical scenes and portraits. He was the first Victorian painter to do children's portraits in period costume.
